Last Night Allgoes2smithereens – N. Nichols – Seattle, WA
I have never come across a James Salter novel before, which is unusual considering I work at a bookstore, so I was skeptical about how it would turn out. Each of James Salters stories (ten in total) hit me so hard; I was literally saying “no way” up to the very last sentence. The writing is so refreshing, yet familiar and intimate. Everyone should experience the beauty of this book!
My first exposure to James Salter came from The New Yorker’s Fiction podcast. Thomas McGuane read and discussed the final story in this book from which it was named, Last Night. The story and the discussion was fantastic and as a result, I purchased this book. The sparse, yet dense stories are all mournful revealing the hurt we humans do to each other either intended or unknowingly.
Palm Court was my favorite of the ten short stories. I could not stop revisiting the notion of returning to unfulfilled or unsatisfied relationships. And the hope that one can recapture what was once unique but never fully claimed. Trying to rectify a mistake that cannot be undone due to time passed is just plain sad and Salter writes about it brilliantly in Palm Court.
All of his stories seem to amplify the hurt and pain of the characters all of whom have lost something along the way. Salter’s world is definitely made up of flawed and unhappy people making his work compelling for its honesty and directness. : Last Night is a spellbinding collection of stories about passion–by turns fiery and subdued, destructive and redemptive, alluring and devastating. These ten powerful stories portray men and women in their most intimate moments. A lover of poetry is asked by his wife to give up what may be his most treasured relationship. A book dealer is forced to face the truth about his life. And in the title story, a translator assists his wife’s suicide, even as he performs a last act of betrayal. James Salter’s assured style and emotional insight make him one of our most essential writers

In Rainbows [Vinyl] As most of my previous reviews would suggest, I normally am a listener to all forms of metal but Radiohead is, and has always been, one of those exquisite exceptions to the rule.
I’ve been listening since the mid 90’s, have all their albums, and I can, with maybe only a second’s hesitation, state that In Rainbows may very well be Radiohead’s finest moment. Even over the epic OK Computer, you might ask. Yessir. What about Kid A? Again, yep. Surely not The Bends, that hallmark of alternative rock. Yup. All three are great and I mean them absolutely no disservice by saying this stands a tick above all (so don’t get pissy with me for saying it).
As much as I love music I can’t describe in the same way as others might why I think this is their best so I won’t try to fake anything (you’d see through that anyway). I respond to music emotionally, not technically, and while I may hear what is technically going on I don’t really understand it, so take my opinion with the proverbial grain of salt. To me, In Rainbows is the perfect collection of simple, unadulterated love songs, especially concerned with that oh so universal feeling of unrequited love. For a group to have collected ten songs that are so heart-wrenching yet gentle and warm without coming across as being cliche is beyond marvelous, and I stand in awe each time I hear the album, which brings me to my next point, which is there is not one single misstep here. Even Faust Arp, which could be seen as a throwaway on a lesser record, is perfectly placed between All I Need and Reckoner. Jigsaw Falling Into Place might be the best song Radiohead have recorded and closer Videotape, with its minimalistic sound, could be their best closer since Street Spirit.
Radiohead is what ‘alternative’ was meant to be, something different than the mainsteam, a term which unfortunately has been subjugated by the latter, its meaning gone. In Rainbows, the seventh studio album from this untouchable band, further cements their status as masters of their craft and truly without peer. : Radiohead release their new album “In Rainbows” on XL Recordings on 31st December 2007.The album is released on CD and vinyl and will be followed by the release of the single “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” on January 14th January 2008. The single is already the most played track from the album on UK and US radio. “In Rainbows” was released in download format earlier this year, when it was received with huge acclaim in the press. On the deliriously satisfying In Rainbows, Radiohead returns to a more straight-ahead (though subdued) rock sound. Much hubbub has been made about this record’s innovative release. Radiohead allowed fans to pay what they wished to download fairly low-resolution tracks from the band’s own website. Like so many innovations, it already seems funny both that it was such big news and that someone else of similar stature hadn’t done it sooner. Some pundits were appalled that it took awhile to download the tracks if you tried to do it at the same time as thousands of other people, while others decried that the group was trying to kill the music industry (or save it). Little of the press seemed to focus on the record itself, which actually made sense because it was so entertaining and inviting, the most low-key album Radiohead has made to date. There’s even a very straight-forward, simple, silly little love song, “House of Cards.” It might be a bit lethargic, but the simple instrumentation of electric guitars, bass, and drums is lovely as heck. A handful of these tunes enchanted fans for years before finally being committed to computer “tape.” This is particularly fitting as In Rainbows is the group’s most “band”-sounding album since OK Computer. This is not a record that hits you over the head with how far this group is pushing the envelope; it’s simply a phenomenal, well-crafted, and exciting album. As soon as it’s done, you’re playing it again. –Mike McGonigal In Rainbows [Vinyl]
